“I recently completed the four week bather & brusher course at Northern California Grooming Academy, and I could not have had a better experience. Every single staff member is so encouraging and supportive. You can feel the passion and love for dogs shared by every staff member and fellow student. It’s a beautiful community. The instructors are incredibly patient (truly, they often repeat themselves over and over for folks who are leaning) and share a wealth of skills and experience to help new groomers learn the fundamentals of bathing and brushing, which are essential to a quality groom. It’s easy to doubt yourself when you’re new to grooming, and everyone on staff shows up to meet you where you are and to keep you progressing toward your learning goals. I love that the school teaches to accommodate the needs of each animal, and to be curious about any challenges to see what the groomer can do differently to make the animal more comfortable, confident and happy with the experience. As a school approved by International Professional Groomers, Inc., you can see the high quality of the curriculum. The content is thorough and informed by lived experience of groomers. The online portion covers key concepts you need to understand from tools and equipment, to sanitation and safety, to principles of ear cleaning, nail trimming, anal gland expression, bathing, drying, brushing and dematting, groomer health and ergonomics, and how to handle and interact with dogs respectfully. The hands on practice lets you apply the knowledge and gain confidence. The cost of the course is an investment that will pay off for anyone who wants to groom their pets more effectively at home or to work in the grooming industry, and is reasonable given the amount of information you gain and the one-on-one attention and hands on practice you receive. There is really no substitute for the practice and feedback you receive.
